Antique Swiss 9K & Hand Painted Enamel Ring. Neuchatel is a Swiss city sometimes referred to historically by the German name Neuenburg. Both the French and German names mean 'New Castle'. During the middle of the 19th century, it became known as the center of watchmaking, and enjoyed a thriving economy. Hand painted miniature portraits were the predecessors of photographs. When there was no other way to record a likeness of someone, the miniatures were treasured and passed down in families.
