The acrylic has stepoffs that hold the glass away from the wood. The engraving is done on the back side of the acrylic to give the plaque a 3D looking effect. With the acrylic standing away from the wood, that gives the option to attatch something to the wood or inlay coins as well. As seen in the pictures with the patch and helmet shield.

Good finish, poor hardware.
Set screws are poor quality and are sometimes powdercoated on the exposed threads. Leads to striped hex sockets and inability to tighten properly.
Durable finish as evidenced by no visible damage after throwing parts across the shop in frustration.
Ended up running self tapping screws thru parts to complete assembly.
